Are Obama's Defense Cuts the Right Course for the Security of the U.S.?

by TN Republican Assembly on 02/05/12

Our U.S. Constitution granted the power to congress to provide for the defense of our county, however, many of the programs and policies that the federal government now supports with our tax dollars are not provided for in the Constitution. In 2012, President Obama limited U.S. military capability to fighting one “regional conflict” and one “holding action.” Defense budgets for 2013-2021 were cut $487 billion – a 9% cut at a minimum. “Sequestration,” required by law with passage of the Budget Control Act in 2011, mandates $500 billion more in 2013-2021 defense cuts – an 18% cut, at a minimum.  President Obama has stated he will veto any attempt by Congress to reverse these cuts. These cuts will cause a reduction in our military manpower of approximately 140,000. During the three plus years that Obama has been in office civilian government positions have increased by approximately 145,000. President Obama has indicated that creating jobs is his number one priority, the impact of these cuts in our military will cause loss of jobs in every state. The Center for Security Policy has provided “Defense Breakdown Economic Impact Reports” (http://www.forthecommondefense.org/reports/defensebreakdownsummaryreports.pdf ) for each state to educate and engage the American public on the importance of maintaining a strong national defense. Take a moment to read about the impact to your state and then provide your opinion on President Obama’s Defense cuts, do you think they are responsible and do you think it is going to increase unemployment and create a financial loss to every state in the Union?
